If Jesus is God how can he be the mediator between God & man ?

How is it that god needs so many mediators? He's got this jesus, he's got Mary, then he's got a myriad of saints. All of whom christians pray to for intersession with their god. I've always wondered why they don't just go to the big guy direct.
