Hi in both WW1 & WW2,what does the black & white cross means that is on the Germans tanks & war planes?

Its the iron cross. Its used to represent germany's military forces. the US has the same thing, but we have a star. The iron cross is also a medal, kinda like the medal of honor, but its German not American
